Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to understand and negotiate the distinctions between first, second and foreign language learning; have a working knowledge of the more widely practised teaching English as a second language TESL methods and be able to use them appropriately; be able to prepare units of work and lesson plans within them for students in the various categories of beginner, intermediate and advanced which cover language structures, functions, phonics and lexis; be able to promote, monitor and evaluate students' command of English.
Synopsis This subject provides students with specialised insights into, and resources for, the teaching of language and literature in the senior school, and techniques for helping second language learners. Initiative and imagination are encouraged in students who will be expected to prepare curriculum materials. The subject is taught by study guides, selected readings, workshops and tutorials.
