Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate that they are informed about the development of the visual arts curriculum in Australia; use appropriate assessment and appraisal techniques for the art of primary children; review the content and procedures of instruction in primary art education; assess the effects of program structure and implementation; determine the requirements of continuity and integration of learning in visual art across the primary curriculum.
Synopsis This subject examines the primary art curriculum of the last twenty-five years in Victoria, and the current curricula of South Australia and Queensland. Students are required to read these curriculum documents with particular reference to the educational influences which have shaped arts learning in Australia. The American educators, Howard Gardner and Elliot Eisner, feature as influential persons in the development of Australian art education. This subject requires students to study current visual arts education research, and to read curriculum in depth. The subject is designed to enhance artistic knowledge and teaching skills with regard to art making and appreciation.
