Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have become familiar with a range of methods for teaching music in primary schooling; have gained knowledge and understanding of current primary music education practices; be able to evaluate music curricula; be able to develop effective classroom music programs.
Synopsis This subject covers the philosophy and practices of classroom music education. It develops skills and understandings in music education acquired in undergraduate subjects. The focus will be on music curricula -- their theoretical underpinning, development, implementation and evaluation. Influential philosophical approaches to music education, such as those of Swanwick, Reimer, Paynter and Elliott, will be considered. Current classroom music practices and pedagogical approaches, such as those of Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, and Schafer, will be investigated. The potential role of music in integrated programs will be emphasised.
Assessment Essay (500 words, ungraded compulsory requirement) + Report (1500 words): 40% + Project (2000 words): 60%
