Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have a detailed understanding of contemporary methodological approaches in music education; have become familiar with `creative', improvisation-based classroom music programs; be able to design materials for extended music learning sequences using these curricular approaches; be able to implement and evaluate contemporary classroom music activities and programs.
Synopsis This subject has been designed to prepare teachers in the development and teaching of upper primary music with a particular focus on class music making. Popular music in the classroom, classroom ensembles, contemporary methodologies and improvisatory sound exploration exercises based on methodologies and approaches developed by Paynter, Self, Wishart and others will be considered. The music education heritage of Orff, Kodaly and Dalcroze and the current eclectic music curriculum will be discussed.
Assessment Written task (1000 words, ungraded, compulsory requirement) + Journal (1200 words): 40% + Project (1800 words): 60%
