Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have a working knowledge of the essential arguments for (and against) deschooling, open schooling and free schooling; be able to analyse, with critical independence, the normative issues raised by these alternatives in education; have considered ways in which the alternatives might be able to advise conventional schooling.
Synopsis This subject explores the alternatives in education as accounted for in free schooling, open schooling and deschooling. The main issues are the extent to which the alternatives are rationalised, justifiable and practised. Where (sometimes) the alternatives appear idealistic if fully implemented, nevertheless consideration is given to how, in part, they might advise for the better conventional educational practises.
Assessment One major essay: 60% + One seminar paper: 40%
