Curriculum studies: children's literature (Australian)

6 points + 2 hours per weekend school and 2 hours per vacation school + Second semester + Gippsland/Distance + Prerequisites: DipT or BTeach

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed a clear understanding of the development of a literature for children in the Australian setting; children's responses to a variety of Australian texts; the value of including Australian older works and Australian Aboriginal works in the English curriculum; resources in the area.

Synopsis Students will study the history and emergence of literature for children in the Australian setting from the earliest period to the present day. There will be a special study of Aboriginal myths and legends and the emergence of modern Aboriginal children's writers. Students will be expected to trial a wide range of Australian children's books and assess child responses to Australian works. A study of Australian radio, TV and film developments in the area of children's literature will be included in this subject, together with Australian children's poetry and drama, comics and magazines. A reading list will accompany this subject.

Assessment Four essays (1000 words each): 25% each
