Curriculum theory and practice

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have knowledge and understanding of curriculum beyond the basic ideas pertaining to curriculum development and evaluation in first, second, and third-year subjects in education; have knowledge of the history of curriculum theory to be able to recognise differing philosophical viewpoints and sets of educational values within various approaches to curriculum theory; have developed skill in the application of theory to the analysis of practical curriculum situations; be able to demonstrate skill in searching the contemporary literature of curriculum theory and applying the knowledge gained to practice; be able to demonstrate the capacity to apply their knowledge in a research project involving a case study of a specific educational institution.

Synopsis Students will study curriculum theory, design and development as these relate in particular to the schools and school systems. A curriculum evaluation case study will form an important part of this subject. The subject is taught by study guides. Teleconferencing and e-mail computer conferencing are available as aids to study. Access to a modern computer and modem is an advantage.

Assessment Essay (800 words): 20% + Case study (2800 words): 70% + Readings report (400 words): 10%
