Basic issues

6 points + 2 hours per week + Full-year subject + Gippsland + Prerequisites: Third-year BEd, GEC2011, DipT

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have examined and analysed contemporary issues in education from a sociological perspective in order to further develop their ability to reflect on their own approaches to classroom teaching and their professional relationship with their colleagues and with the school community

Synopsis This subject aims to involve students in critically analysing formal education in Australia from a number of perspectives. Topics covered will include an analysis of classroom management; teacher expectations; classroom knowledge; styles of teaching; evaluation of students; school-community relationships; teaching as a career. The subject is taught by readings, lectures, tutorials and study guides.

Assessment Assignment 1 First essay (1000 words): 30% + Second essay (750 words): 20% + Assignment 2 First essay (1200 words): 30% + Second essay (750 words): 20%
