Study Asia in Asia

12 points + 3 hours per week + Summer semester + China or Indonesia

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have undertaken tasks involving individualised study planning, goal setting, implementation and evaluation, preparation of material for publication; understood the synopsis approach to research; achieve a deeper understanding of an Asian culture; developed curriculum materials for use in the classroom.

Synopsis The subject is offered as an intensive immersion program on location in China or Indonesia. The subject is designed for primary, secondary and tertiary teachers with an interest in Asian cultures (music, drama, art, geography, literature, economics, history, social education, language). The first week consists of lectures, consultations and planning with staff from Monash and the host university to assist students in identifying topics of study and methodologies. The next two weeks involve fieldwork and the collecting and/or creating of materials suitable for use in the classroom. The final week is spent on preliminary development of a curriculum unit. Throughout the four-week period, students have the support of individual tutors.

Assessment Oral and written fieldwork observation task 1 (500 words): 10% + Written fieldwork observation task 2 (500 words): 10% + Oral and written study plan (1000 words): 30% + Project (4000 words): 50%
