Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have an understanding of (a) the concept and research basis of cross-cultural psychology and (b) the importance of cross-cultural considerations in child rearing practices and education.
Synopsis This subject examines several areas of psychological research, with specific reference to crosscultural literature. Crosscultural research is discussed with a view to determining the universality of principles and theories of human development and behaviour. Specific topics covered include socialisation and child-rearing practices; attitudes, beliefs and values; cognitive and language development; education, teaching and learning styles. Students will be expected to give one half-hour presentation, submit a major essay and undertake a short-answer test. References will be provided throughout the semester.
Assessment Seminar participation/presentation + Essay (3000 words): 70% + Short-answer test: 30%
