Mr M Brown

8 points + 2 hours per week + First semester + Clayton + Distance

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed an understanding of: the pedagogical implications associated with the introduction of competency-based training; appropriate approaches to teaching and learning for adults involved with work-related learning; the design and use of materials and resources for flexible delivery; approaches to teaching and learning which attempt to integrate English language and literacy with work-related learning; approaches to teaching and learning which attempt to accommodate prior learning, utilise the workplace environment and integrate work performance; the way the approaches to teaching and learning can be designed and enacted to reinforce and/or challenge the social relations of the workplace.

Synopsis This subject is framed within the broad social, political and economic context and considers the ways in which the context shapes the vocational education and training field and work-related learning. The subject focuses on the development of pedagogical practices (approaches to teaching and learning) which take account of adult learners developing learning for and in the workplace. Participants will be encouraged to explore critical and feminist pedagogies, action learning, flexible delivery, instructional design, self-paced and self-directed learning, continuing professional education, work-based learning and other approaches useful to adults involved in work-related learning. A number of case studies will be presented for participants to examine and determine aspects of exemplary practice. A further consideration will be the way that approaches to teaching and learning might align with the intentions of the stakeholders in the workplace and training reform agendas.

Assessment Two written assignments (1500 words): 30% and (3000 words): 70% + Class presentation
