Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of concepts of normality and abnormality in human behaviour; sources of variation in children's behaviour and problems arising from them; principles of behavioural intervention; human relationships and the special nature of the helping relationship; patterns of communication and processes in the helping interview; application of the concept of the helping relationship to the special educational and other therapeutic settings; selected examples of counselling systems. Students should have developed the skill to critically evaluate published research in a relevant area of special education and a commitment to the development of all pupils, regardless of their pattern or level of skills.
Synopsis An introduction to the variations in children's behaviour and problems arising. Sources of variation in behaviour. Introduction to the concepts of helping and human relationships for professional staff working with children in a variety of settings. Outline of selected methods of behavioural change, personal development and pastoral care. Helping relationships in the classroom and other settings. Application of concepts of helping to the issue of integration of children with disabilities in regular settings. Students will be expected to participate in regular lectures and discussions as well as individually negotiated practical work.
Assessment Written (1000 words): 20% + Examinations (2 hours): 80%
