Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to administer and score commonly used standardised self-report questionnaires; describe the steps involved in the development of a norm-referenced self-report scale; translate empirical or psychometric jargon into plain English; differentiate between different types of psychological research; conduct a computer search of relevant literature; critically evaluate a published empirical study; state predictions or hypotheses in a testable form.
Synopsis The subject offers practical training in the design and preparation of a research project. Students will learn how a research question is devised, how the design of an investigation must meet certain criteria, and how practical constraints force compromises in design. Practical skills will be developed in undertaking a systematic literature search, report writing, and a study in the use of microcomputers in data processing and presentation. Students will plan a research project which will be carried out in second semester.
