Methods and practice of teaching biology

12 points + 2 hours per week + Full-year subject + Clayton + Prerequisites: Minor (2 years) in one of the biological sciences

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have knowledge and understanding about the level of content appropriate for the teaching of biology from years 7-12 and suitable ways to interest and motivate their future pupils. Students should also feel confident about teaching and assessing CATs (Year-12 assessment tasks) and about developing coursework material.

Synopsis This subject aims to provide a comprehensive guide to the teaching (and learning) of the VCE units 1-4, as well as introducing students to the biological ideas and concepts covered in the junior science years. Students will be expected to participate in a variety of activities including designing and conducting fieldwork, developing units of work and carrying out practical investigations.

Assessment A precondition for a pass in this method is a pass in practice teaching and 80% attendance at all timetabled classes + A satisfactory level of achievement is also required for each of the following tasks Practical work + Assignments (percentage weightings to be negotiated with students)
