Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to make connections between the nature of education and the nature of society; understand the nature of schooling as an organised social system; and appreciate the influence of significant social issues on educational practice.
Synopsis Social perspectives are applied to selected issues in teaching, learning and associated activities, to the general functioning of schools as formally organised social institutions, and to some general educational issues, eg schooling and employment, differentiation and discrimination in schools, effectiveness of schooling, policies and prospects for schooling. The recommended reading will serve as an introduction to the understanding of schooling in the Australian context. A detailed reading list will be provided at the commencement of the subject.
