Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of concepts of normality and abnormality in human behaviour; sources of variation in human behaviour and problems arising from them; major categories of behavioural disturbance and possible intervention strategies. Students should be able to critically evaluate research in psychopathology and have a detailed knowledge of a major area of psychopathology.
Synopsis This subject is concerned with the systematic study of psychopathology and associated clinical manifestations. The program will cover the range of age from infancy to old age and will encompass major psychoses, developmental and personality disorders and the neuroses. Consideration will be made of a range of interventions which follow diagnosis in a variety of settings including in-patient, out-patient clinic and community facilities. Legal and ethical issues and their practical implications will be discussed. Major emphases of the subject will be upon the application of scientific principles to clinical hypothesis formulation and testing and upon the application of material presented to professional practice.
