Gender issues in mathematics, science and technology education

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed an awareness of the range of gender issues which relate to the teaching of mathematics, science and technology; an understanding of the historical antecedents of the current situation; an understanding of the range of factors contributing to the current situation; the ability to analyse complex education issues.

Synopsis The subject focuses on gender issues in mathematics, science and technology education. Topics covered include delineation of the problem from a historical as well as a contemporary perspective, an examination of contributing factors (situational, personal and school related), and explorations of possible intervention strategies. Australian and international data will be presented. Students are encouraged to explore in depth at least one issue of particular interest or relevance to them.
