Research in science education

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to identify current approaches in research in science learning and curriculum; evaluate these approaches in terms of the stated purposes of the research; prepare teaching and assessment approaches that reflect our current understanding of student science learning; and describe appropriate approaches to the up-dating of their own knowledge of science per se.

Synopsis This subject provides an opportunity for students to explore issues in science education in some depth with a more detailed use of its research and review literature. These issues can be centred around the science teacher, the science learner, the science classroom and science itself. The first three lead to studies of the teaching strategies, the role of the learner and curriculum in science to meet learner needs. A section of the program is devoted to science per se, but with its communication to students very much in mind. Students may have the opportunity to work individually with staff of the Faculty of Science on projects whose emphasis is (in the communication sense described above) either the up-dating of their science knowledge or the development of options for classroom use in new content areas.

Assessment Two assignments (2000 words each): 30% each + Written report (1500 words): 20% + Seminar and poster: 20%
