Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have improved their own level of written proficiency in their language other than English; be able to select appropriate texts to which L2 learners can respond in writing; have produced a writing skills development program for a group of primary, secondary or adult learners; be able to design appropriate criteria for measuring progress in different written second language genres, including recognising essential characteristics of these genres; have developed an awareness of the processes involved in producing written texts and how these can be applied in classroom contexts.
Synopsis This subject will give practising teachers of a language other than English the opportunity to develop their own written competence in a number of genres, particularly those required by the VCE LOTE study design, the Victorian LOTE CSF and the national LOTE Statement and Profile. In addition, it will enable these teachers to experience ways of improving writing skills in these text types which they can then apply to their language classes. The emphasis will be on the process of developing written competence in a second language with a view to using this as a model in LOTE classrooms.
