Communicative language teaching

Ms M-T Jensen

12 points + 3 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: GED3823 or GED3833

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed an understanding of the notion of communicative competence in a second or foreign language. Students should have become familiar with procedures for the analysis of learner needs, course design, teaching materials and activities which promote communicative competence in learners and with issues of assessment arising from the communicative language teaching approach.

Synopsis This subject is designed for teachers of English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) and for teachers of languages other than English (LOTE). The focus of this subject is the CLT approach which emphasises the negotiation of meaning rather than the teaching of language structures and vocabulary for their own sake. Implications of the approach for course design, delivery and assessment are considered in a range of foreign and second language teaching contexts. The subject further explores aspects of language teaching and assessment introduced in GED3823 (Theory and practice of TESOL) and GED3833 (Theory and practice of SLE).

Assessment Series of lessons, including original materials, for the CLT classroom: 50% + Seminar presentation: 25% + Participation: 25%
