Understanding Australian education and training

12 points + 3 hours per week + Second semester + Monday 6.30 pm + Clayton

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have become familiar with sociological literature or education; have used sociological concepts in an analysis of Australian education and training; be able to identify and analyse sociological issues in education.

Synopsis This subject aims to introduce students to ways of seeing education sociologically. The subject will consider the changing character of Australian education and training, and Australian society. Major sociological approaches to the study of education will be discussed. This subject will be useful for students working in primary, secondary, tertiary and other professional education and training who wish to extend their understanding of education and society as a basis for policy and practice. Starting time will be negotiated in the first session.

Assessment Seminar: 30% + Research paper (6000 words): 70%
