Resource management in educational institutions

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate competence in a range of resource management skills listed below; understand the relationship between resource management, planning and budgeting; critically appraise current theories of resource management and be familiar with computer tools for the effective management of resources.

Synopsis This subject is designed to meet the concerns of senior administrators and middle-level managers with the key issues of resource allocation and management at the micro or institutional level of the school, college or university - private and public. It examines both the theoretical and practical issues in the allocation and control of human, financial and other resources and facilities in the various types of institutions under situations of expanding, contracting and constant funding. Specific topics will include financial planning and control, program budgeting, personnel issues (ie staffing) in resource allocation, space planning and effective facility usage and management. The significance of key central policy concepts including performance evaluation, accountability, multi-skilling, interface management, mobilisation of community resources and so on, for the institution will be examined in detail. Computer applications in resource management and administration will be another key focus with workshop sessions using management software packages currently in use in schools and other educational institutions.
