The course is taken over two years of part-time study through distance education. Students receive study materials for the various modules of the course. In each year of the course, practice teaching is undertaken in schools located close to a student's place of residence. Practice teaching is an integral part of GEC5501 (Teaching and curriculum studies I) and GEC5502 (Teaching and curriculum studies II). In the first year of the course twenty days of practice teaching are required, and in the second year of the course twenty-five days are compulsory. Practice teaching is usually undertaken during May, July and August in each year.

There may also be a small number of places available for full-time study through distance education. Students undertaking the course full-time complete the required forty-five (45) days of practice teaching in two blocks of time in school during May and again in July and August.

Practice teaching must be undertaken in Australia so as to provide for appropriate supervision during the teaching rounds.

Graduate Certificate of Education (Professional Development Studies)

and

Graduate Diploma of Education (Professional Development Studies)

Course codes: ECPDDG (Graduate Certificate); EGPDDG (Graduate Diploma)

Course adviser: Dr T Taylor

Entry requirements

Admission to the courses will be open to applicants who possess a degree or diploma and who are qualified educators or who have suitably acceptable experience in a related field.

Course structure

The qualifications are designed to be very flexible and will permit a wide range of studies and activities in professional development to be drawn together including credit for non-award programs, workplace research, formal subjects of study, supervised independent study and so on, as part of a Recognition of Prior Learning Program. Programs of study are to be developed as contracts approved by the School Board of Education for individuals, or groups: from a school, a network, an area of responsibility across schools, or other organisational subject. Individual students, schools, districts, networks or groups may plan contracts as `study pathways' with the assistance of tutors.

It should be noted that professional development pathways may be contracted by educators in industry or professionals other than school teachers. Study modes will vary according to the needs of program components and may include, for example, a variety of forms of distance education; lectures, seminars, workshops or tutorials at a nominated centre; teleconferences or video conferences; residential schools, research and/or development; and direct experience through innovation.

Length of courses

The graduate certificate course is equivalent to four 6 credit point subjects of study and is normally completed over one year part-time by distance education. The graduate diploma is equivalent to eight 6 credit point subjects of study and is normally completed over two years part-time by distance education.

Master of Education (by Research)

Course code: EREDDG

Student adviser: Dr G Dettrick

The Master of Education (by Research) is a two-year full-time or four-year part-time degree designed to provide candidates with the opportunity to pursue an independent research study, working closely with a member of the faculty who has relevant and recent research experience in the area. It is expected that the thesis will make a solid contribution to the chosen area of research and may provide a springboard for further studies at the doctoral level. This degree is available to students with an approved degree and professional experience in areas in which the School of Education is conducting ongoing research.
