The MPsych(Child and Educational) prepares graduates to practise as educational and child psychologists in schools, hospitals, clinics, and private practices. For more details regarding the role and employment prospects of educational and child psychologists, students should consult the College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists, Australian Psychological Society.
The MPsych(Child and Educational) consists of three parts: advanced coursework, supervised practica and research thesis.
+ GED1828 Exceptionality: assessment and programming
+ GED1838 Cognitive, personality and educational assessment
plus (b) one or both of the following subjects:
+ GED1825 Clinical behaviour therapy
+ GED1831 Psychopathology
If only one of the subjects listed in (b) is taken, then the fourth subject must be taken from:
+ GED1802 Cultural psychology
+ GED1805 Cognitive psychology, learning and teaching
+ GED1807 Anxiety disorders
+ GED1808 Adolescent development and its educational implications
+ GED1809 Advanced studies in learning disabilities
+ GED1813 Behavioural problems in children
+ GED1815 Intellectual disability
+ GED1823 Families and parenting
+ GED1833 Health psychology and biopsychosocial research
+ GED1835 Computers and human learning
Details of these subjects are to be found either set out below or under the heading Master of Educational Studies in this handbook.
The research thesis complies with the regulations for the MPsych as laid down in the regulations section of this handbook but must be completed on a topic relevant to the discipline of child and educational psychology. Students should consult with the course coordinator regarding their choice of topic for the thesis.
