The MPsych(Counselling) prepares graduates to practise as counselling psychologists in a range of settings including hospitals, community centres, schools, tertiary institutions, private practices, industry, health-oriented facilities and other similar places. For more detailed information regarding the role and employment prospects of counselling psychologists, students should consult the Board of Counselling Psychologists, Australian Psychological Society.
The MPsych(Counselling) consists of three parts: advanced coursework, supervised practica and research thesis.
+ GED1826 Counselling: theory and practice
+ GED1827 Advanced psychological assessment
+ GED1832 Legal, ethical and clinical issues in counselling psychology
plus one other subject chosen from:
+ GED0809 Technological skills in research
+ GED1807 Anxiety disorders
+ GED1825 Clinical behaviour therapy
+ GED1831 Psychopathology
+ GED1833 Health psychology and biopsychosocial research
Details of these subjects are to be found either set out below or under the heading Master of Educational Studies in this handbook.
The research thesis complies with the regulations for the MPsych as laid down in the regulations section of the handbook but must be completed on a topic relevant to the discipline of counselling psychology. Students should consult with the course coordinator regarding their choice of topic for the thesis.
