Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be familiar with current issues affecting arts education in Australia; have developed a deeper understanding of the place of the arts in education; be able to demonstrate understanding of the implications of current policies and curriculum documents relating to arts education; be aware of the importance of acquiring advocacy and communication skills; and be able to demonstrate an understanding of changes and developments in a chosen field within the arts.
Synopsis Issues which may be addressed during this subject include cultural and environmental influences on arts education; needs of pupils and schools; needs of parents and communities; the roles of teacher-training institutions, arts specialists, the Department of School Education, arts advisers, consultants and organisations; arts advocacy; acquisition of resources; trends and implications for the future.
Assessment Class participation: 20% + Written assignment (6000 words): 80%
