Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject students should understand in general terms the structure, organisation and mode of operation of a computer system; have begun to understand and appreciate the role of computers in education; have developed user skills necessary for the effective use of the computer; possess a basic understanding of the concepts underlying word processing, Logo, databases, interactive fiction and adventure game software, and the rationale underpinning their use in the classroom; have developed an understanding of the logistics of using computers as part of the teaching and learning process.
Synopsis Computer awareness; development of a conceptual model of a computer system; types of computers; types of processing; computer applications and implications. The role of computers in primary education; teaching about computers; teaching with computers; computer-related curriculums. Computer literacy; the development of user skills in the applications associated with teaching/learning in the primary classroom environment, with particular emphasis on word processing, Logo, databases, problem solving, and interactive fiction. Evaluation and selection of software and hardware. Enrolments in this subject are restricted.
