Theory of the effective school and preschool

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have knowledge and understanding of the concept of organisational effectiveness; quality in Australian schooling; school review and development; the concepts of school effectiveness and school improvement; the relationship between organisational effectiveness and quality educational provision; the relationship between leadership and school excellence. Students should have developed skills in the measurement of school effectiveness; school policy development; implementing and evaluating curriculum change. Students should have developed attitudes to enable them to work with other members of the school community in school-based decision making; adopt a positive view of the current changes in school organisation.

Synopsis An advanced study of the factors underpinning the development of school excellence and their relationship to organisational management and the decision making processes. Students will consider theoretical issues such as the relationship between organisation effectiveness and education, quality in Australian schooling, school effectiveness and school improvement, school restructuring and the Schools of the Future program. They will also consider practical issues such as leadership in the effective school, school-based decision making, school policy development and staffing issues.

Assessment Essay (3000 words): 50% + Examination (2 hours): 50%
