Assisting children with special needs 2

6 points + 3 hours per week + Second semester + Peninsula

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to identify the important issues involved in the professional partnership between classroom teachers and other therapists or professionals involved in the welfare of an exceptional child; have furthered their understanding of the importance of the family context and exceptionality and their ability to identify and develop appropriate curriculum strategies and environmental adjustments necessary for the successful mainstreaming of exceptional children.

Synopsis This subject is an advanced extension of studies from first semester. It includes an examination of the techniques and strategies used in the identification, diagnosis and planning for children with special needs, an examination of the teacher's role as a professional in partnership with other professionals, therapists, families and the wider community. The emphasis will be on the students learning to apply the knowledge gained in analysis of case studies and preparation of appropriate programs.

Assessment Written (2000 to 3000 words): 40% + Examination: 50%
