Mr G Hurworth and Dr R Smith

6 points + Third semester (summer term, 1997) + Peninsula + Prerequisites: EDN3295 or permission of lecturer

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the history of German music in the context of the places visited in the tour; demonstrate an appreciation of the relationship between music and the other arts (eg, architecture, visual arts) as observed during the tour; appreciate the relationship between musical or performance style and the buildings, purposes and instruments for which music was designed.

Synopsis This subject is offered as an intensive program in German music and culture including lectures, concerts, opera and museum visits on location in Germany, Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic. By means of an organised tour through these areas, participants in this summer school will come to understand more deeply the music (and the other arts, history, geography and general culture) of this important area of central Europe in its correct context. The summer school will last approximately four weeks.
