Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to identify the key factors involved in effective communication in children's services; demonstrate understanding of the early childhood teacher's role in relation to working with other professionals; analyse and determine appropriate procedures in professional dilemmas in accordance with the early childhood code of ethics.
Synopsis A critical analysis of the factors relating to professional development for those who work in children's services. The emphasis in this subject will be on understanding the importance of effective communication in service organisations. Topics will include written and oral communication, communicative decision making, advocacy, stress management and the professional relationship between service provider and service user. The caregiver's role in working with volunteers, students in training and other professionals will also be examined. An analysis of the recently developed code of ethics for children's services personnel will also be included in this course.
Assessment Project (3000 words): 50% + Examinations: 50%
