Health education

6 points + 3 hours per week + Second semester + Peninsula

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have an understanding of the nature of health education and its place in the Victorian Curriculum and Standards Framework series; be aware of the available resources which will be useful in various health education topics; be familiar with a variety of teaching strategies and how to use them effectively in exploring health education issues; have gained knowledge in a range of topics suitable for inclusion in a primary school health education program; have developed skills in formulating educational programs in health; have developed skills in the assessment of learning and the evaluation of programs in health education; displayed a commitment to the process of health education.

Synopsis Many misunderstandings surface when the concepts of health and health education are discussed. This subject will examine these concepts focusing on the primary school situation. Consideration will be given to past, present and future directions of school health education. Approaches to dealing with controversial topics such as drug education and sexuality education will be highlighted. Resources available to health education will be presented and discussed.

Assessment Curriculum task: 50% + Health issue summary: 20% + Evaluation of a resource: 30%
