Environmental science 8: microbiology

Lecturer in charge to be advised

4 points + 3 hours per week + Second semester + Peninsula

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have acquired modern knowledge in the field of microbiology; understood how knowledge of microbiology has developed; developed basic microbiological skills and techniques, and applied them to the study of selected micro-organisms; become aware of the significance of microorganisms in the natural environment.

Synopsis Topics include the roots of microbiology; the nature of micro-organisms; microbial growth and its control; infection and immunity; decomposition; the spread of diseases; viruses and viral diseases; environmental, water, food, agricultural and industrial microbiology.

Assessment Written (3000 words): 50% + Examinations (two hours): 50% + Laboratory work
