Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed a knowledge and an awareness of particular environment problems; devised and used strategies for obtaining information about environmental problems; considered alternative prospects for the resolution of environmental problems; further developed the writing and speaking skills needed to debate environmental problems and prospects for their resolution; developed the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a reasoned perspective on environmental problems.
Synopsis In this option knowledge gained by students in studies previously undertaken is drawn together and applied to two major topics: the future of the environment and the future of the human species. Issues considered in the latter include population control, eugenics, human cloning, genetic engineering. In dealing with the future of the environment, students consider methods of predicting future trends including the use of models and consider global issues such as sustainable development, the enhanced greenhouse effect and biodiversity.
Assessment Major written presentation: 50% + Two-page research papers (5): 50%
