4 points + 3 hours per week + Second semester + Peninsula

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the extent to which Australian musicians have been influenced by indigenous Asian and Australian musics; demonstrate an understanding of the educational policies of Percy Grainger relating to Asian and Australian arts; demonstrate familiarity with the exhibits, policies and educational aims of the Grainger Museum with specific reference to Asian and Australian arts; make judgements and decisions about the arts; demonstrate familiarity with the works of one Australian musician who has been influenced by indigenous Asian or Australian musics; demonstrate a continued development of skills in researching and writing about the arts.

Synopsis This subject examines how recent musicians in Australia have been influenced by indigenous Asian and Australian arts. Reference to practitioners in other arts will be made where appropriate. For Asia, the main emphasis will be on the areas of East and South-East Asia, therefore continuing the focus which has been established in the first two years. As an example of an Australian musician, the subject will focus on Percy Grainger. In particular, the educational implications of Percy Grainger and Melbourne's Grainger Museum will be studied, including the museum's role as a storehouse for information and artefacts on indigenous arts of Asia and Australia and the implications for the museum of Australians studying the indigenous arts of Asia and Australia.
