Arts in Australia and Asia 5: research in the arts

4 points + 3 hours per week + First semester + Peninsula + Prerequisites: EDN2665 and EDN2675

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate familiarity with a range of research techniques in dealing with a spectrum of research questions in the arts; develop ability and confidence in researching the arts; develop skills in writing about the arts by selecting and applying the appropriate methods to a research question; develop the ability to prepare, present and defend verbally a research proposal on a topic from Asian or Australian arts; develop the skills required to write a review of appropriate literature on a topic from Asian or Australian arts.

Synopsis This subject is divided into two parts. In the first part students will attend weekly seminars, covering topics related to research in the arts including quantitative and qualitative research, data collection and analysis, participant observation, writing a literature review and ethnography. In the second part students will prepare a research proposal and literature review based on their previous two years of study, which they will present as a seminar.

Assessment Written: 70% + Seminar presentation: 30%
