Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed an understanding of the nature of art in its meaning and function; the characteristics, qualities and development of child art; the development of child art in other cultures; the methods of developing classroom programs in art education; the components of meaningful art education programs; the methods of teaching art and methods of evaluating child art. Students should also have developed the ability to work freely and creatively in the range of art or craft materials to be found in the primary school; have produced a workable art program suitable for use with a nominated grade level for at least one year.

Synopsis This unit has been designed to give students a further opportunity to develop their understanding of the nature of child art, its role in the primary school curriculum and child development in general. Students will explore the meaning and function of art in society and its relationship to children and develop this through the production of art at their own level. They should develop methods of devising meaningful art programs, construct sequential art lessons, be able to evaluate child art and have experienced a variety of methods of teaching art. Throughout the subject students will be encouraged to develop a deeper understanding of the symbols employed by children and become aware of the negative influences imposed upon child art by the adult world.
