Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to recognise different types of scores and be able to read a full score with a degree of fluency; demonstrate familiarity with selected repertoire from European music up to the early nineteenth century to the present, and the ability to distinguish aurally the pieces studied; demonstrate understanding of the social, historical and cultural context of the repertoire studied, and of its influence on the music; demonstrate an understanding of the main musical forms used during the period studied, and their historical development; perform instrumental music in a range of styles; participate in an instrumental ensemble, demonstrating an understanding of the technical and musical demands of the music performed; show a commitment to the cooperative nature and responsibilities of group performance.
Synopsis (1) Lectures: Unit 5 - Vocal music II. A survey of the main forms, styles and repertoire to the twentieth century; Unit 6 - Symphonic music II. A survey of the main orchestral forms, styles and repertoires of abstract symphone music. (2) Creative workshop: as per EDN3285. (3) Instrumental workshop: as for EDN2295.
Assessment Practical: 30% + Folio: 30% + Examination: 40%
