Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to recognise different types of scores and be able to follow a full score while listening to the music; demonstrate familiarity with selected repertoire from European music up to the early nineteenth century, and the ability to distinguish aurally the pieces studied; demonstrate understanding of the social, historical and cultural context of the repertoire studied, and of its influence on the music; demonstrate an understanding of the main musical forms used during the period studied, and their historical development; perform vocal music in a range of styles; participate in a vocal or choral group, demonstrating an understanding of the technical and musical demands of the music performed; show a commitment to the cooperative nature and responsibilities of group performance.
Synopsis (1) Lectures: Unit 3 - Choral music. A survey of the main forms, styles and repertoires from the Middle Ages to the present; Unit 4 - Symphonic music I. A survey of the beginnings of orchestral forms, styles and repertoire of programmatic symphonic music. (2) Creative workshop: practically oriented course designed to develop more advanced listening and creative skills linked with the content of the lectures. (3) Choral workshop: as for EDN2285.
Assessment Examination: 40% + Practical work: 30% + Folio: 30%
