Ms J Robbins

4 points + 2 hours per week + Second semester + Peninsula + Prerequisites: EDN1115, EDN1125 and EDN3115

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have gained knowledge and understandings of different methods of programming and planning in early childhood settings, and evaluate the effectiveness and appropriateness of each method; the factors which influence the development of both a personal and centre or school philosophy; the specific issues involved in multi-age groups, and in the special needs of planning appropriate programs for three-year-old children. Students should be able to demonstrate skill at planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate, anti-bias, inclusive program which meets the needs of children within their field work centres, and reflects an on-going assessment of the children's development; the ability to work effectively within a team; the ability to carry out the administrative tasks involved in running an early childhood centre; the formulation of a clearly articulated personal philosophy of early childhood education. Students should have developed attitudes which demonstrate an attitude of enjoyment of teaching; a willingness to undertake teaching and management tasks on fieldwork placements; confidentiality and professionalism in regard to fieldwork placements and teaching practice.

Synopsis Strand `A': This strand will contribute further to students' programming skills and the implementation of developmentally and culturally appropriate practices. Consideration will also be given to topics such as multi-age groupings and their teaching/management implications, indoor/outdoor programs, and the selection and implementation of special activities which reflect cultural traditions, particularly festivals, gifts and language. Other issues addressed will include working with parents and committees, the role of regional early-childhood advisers, applying for jobs, and developing personal and centre philosophies. Strand `B': A further twenty to twenty-five days of supervised practice teaching in preschools. Students will also carry out observations, field trips and volunteer teaching in services associated with young children.
