Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of a number of music notation styles, including graphic, proportional and cypher notation, as well as standard music notation; perform on the electronic keyboard or other approved instrument pieces and technical work of a more demanding nature than those studied in the first year of the sequence; sing in a group with confidence, accuracy and proper voice production; perform instrumental and choral music of a range of styles and periods; through involvement in performance, further develop their understanding of music theory, terminology and structure; demonstrate an understanding of the process of composition through organising sounds into meaningful structures; create compositions using a range of sound sources including non-instrumental sounds and conventional instruments used in unconventional ways; exhibit an experimental attitude towards the possibilities of musical composition and a sense of ownership and pride in their own creations; show a commitment to the cooperative nature and responsibilities of group performance.
Synopsis (1) Practical: as for EDN1285. (2) Composition workshop: students are introduced to a number of notation styles (graphic and proportional, cypher etc) through various composition exercises. (3) Choral workshop: through singing, all students in music studies 3-6 are involved with music history, styles and techniques culminating in a performance.
Assessment Class test 10% + Practical 60% + Folio: 30%
