Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to undertake teaching responsibilities and practise basic teaching skills in middle level grades for daily periods ranging from two hours to two consecutive days in duration; discuss and compare their off-campus experiences with the experiences of other students, reflecting on the teaching and class management styles they have encountered, exploring why teachers utilise different approaches and strategies; examine and discuss issues of pupil safety and welfare, with particular emphasis on the implementation of a protective behaviours program and other strategies for preventing child abuse and neglect; demonstrate awareness of the factors which create stress in teaching professionals, and strategies for avoiding stress.
Synopsis This subject consists of two complementary strands. The strand `A' off-campus program provides the opportunity for students to have further experience in basic lesson planning and to consider and practise selected teaching skills. The aim of strand `B' is to focus students' attention on issues relating to teacher stress (including strategies for avoiding stress) and to consider and discuss contemporary approaches to minimising child abuse and neglect through legislation and anti-violence community education, and education relevant to membership of a profession mandated to report child abuse.
Assessment Practice-teaching (strand `A', off-campus): 48% + Examination (strand `B', on-campus): 52%
