Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed an appreciation of language as social practice; familiarity with some of the major factors affecting children's oral and written language development; an awareness of the relationship between various components of and key concepts in language statements and policies; an awareness of some of the teaching strategies, activities and resources suited to assisting children in their oral language development.
Synopsis An introduction to children's language development and the place of language within the school curriculum. Oracy and its significance will constitute the major focus of the subject. Topics include oracy development in childhood; the significance of talk and speech across the curriculum; children as listeners and learners; the teacher as listener and speaker; teaching implications for furthering children's oral language development.
Assessment Two tests: 50% each + or + one test and one written assignment (1500 words): 50% each
