Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have gained knowledge and understanding of the principles of developmentally appropriate learning experiences for young children; the individual planning cycle or process appropriate for young children; the interpersonal and interactive nature of work in early childhood settings; the basic principles of supervision and guidance when working with a small group of preschool aged children. Students should be able to demonstrate the skills of planning, implementing and supervising basic activities for small groups of children in a preschool; relating and responding to children in a warm, supportive manner; displaying the professional behaviour required for an early childhood teacher in training in the areas of dress, punctuality, courtesy, confidentiality, preparation for tasks and working with adults in early childhood centres. Students should have developed attitudes in confirming their commitment to a career choice as an early childhood educator; valuing the importance of the preschool program as an important stage in the education continuum; feeling confident in their ability as an early childhood educator in training.
Synopsis The principles of planning developmentally appropriate learning experiences for young children will be introduced and students will have the opportunity of applying those principles in the field experience program. An introduction to observation and planning to meet the needs of individual children will be included.
Assessment Assignment (1500 words): 40% + Examination: 60% + Hurdle: Satisfactory standard in field experience placements
