Knowledge-based decision support

Objectives At the completion of this subject students should understand the context, role and scope of knowledge-based decision support systems; be able to use suitable techniques to analyse, design and build a prototype knowledge-based decision support system; and be aware of the current areas of research in knowledge-based decision support.

Synopsis In this subject, students explore the problems of application of knowledge-based systems technology to decision support. The topics for study include the relationship between knowledge-based systems and other corporate information systems, methods of knowledge acquisition, representation, and the role of an intelligent adviser in decision-making. Students will explore the concepts discussed in classes by building a knowledge-based system in the context of a decision support application. Development of a prototype knowledge-based decision support system is a major component of the subject.

Assessment Written (3000 words): 50% + Practical work: 50%
