Objectives At the completion of this subject students should know the theories and principles of corporate systems strategy; understand the corporate and social impacts of the emerging global `information society'; be able to apply the theory of inter-organisational systems to the practice of electronic commerce; and appreciate how to interact with organisations and individuals from a variety of backgrounds and cultures.
Synopsis The subject builds on concepts introduced in SYS1252 and SYS2168 (SYS2161). Systems analysts today are increasingly required to develop information systems which cross organisational boundaries and necessitate the sharing of information between organisations. The use of such systems for strategic gain by innovative firms is a major factor in the success of both public and private sector organisations. Such inter-organisational systems (IOSs) are enabled by the growth of telecommunications networks and the inter-linking of such networks to form a global web of interconnection. Students need to understand the role that this network plays in supporting the development of IOSs. Students graduating in the latter part of the 1990s and hoping for career development and promotion in the 21st century will need to be aware of these trends and, more importantly, to be able to make use of the opportunities provided by global interconnections in the practice of their profession. This subject will include a weekly laboratory session in which students will gain experience in international electronic commerce.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 50% + Practical work involving a group project: 25% + Laboratory simulation game: 25%
