Objectives At the completion of this subject students should know about the role of information technology (IT) plays in an organisational context and how that context influences IT; understand the structure, culture and symbols of organisations, and how these aspects interact with IT; be able to assess the benefits and drawbacks of IT by critically examining the application of IT from a broad range of perspectives; and value professionalism and ethical practice in computing.

Synopsis The subject deals with information technology (IT) in its organisational context. In particular it examines how this context influences the application of IT at the same time as IT influences the organisation. An understanding of this interaction requires the study of both organisations and IT from many perspectives. The course covers issues such as the nature of organisations, design of organisations, organisational culture, symbols and power structures, job design, the IT function in organisations, the impact of different systems development methods, evaluation of IT, professionalism and IT practice, values and ethics.
