Objectives At the completion of the subject students should be able to identify the key hardware and software components of computer communications networks; understand the fundamental concepts and techniques in computer communications; develop communications software to implement simple protocols; assemble and test small-scale networks, and carry out basic troubleshooting.
Synopsis This subject addresses computer communications media and techniques and the layer model of computer communication. The content covers survey of data communications applications, layer model for communication processes, asynchronous and synchronous communication, line control protocols, bit-oriented protocols, packet switching, ISO model for open-systems interconnection, local area networks.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 50% + Assignments (2 at 15% each): 30% + Laboratory practical work: 20%
