Objectives At the completion of the subject, students should be able to identify the role and purpose of major operating systems components; modify operating systems configurations to suit particular environments; modify operating systems components to carry out additional functions; and develop additional operating and system software modules.

Synopsis This subject provides students with an understanding and working knowledge of the key components of operating systems and software. The syllabus includes specification of operating systems, processes, interprocess communications, multi-tasking, scheduling, memory management, virtual memory, file system management, I/O control, system security, introduction to distributed operating systems.

Assessment Examination: 60% + Assignment and practical work: 40%
