Mathematics I

6 points + Three 1-hour lectures per week and one 1-hour tutorial + First,
second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: VCE Specialist Mathematics and, at
levels 3 and 4, Mathematical Methods + Prohibitions: CSC1080, GAS1611, GAS1613,
MAT1050, MAT1420, MAT1430, MAT1711, MAT1722, MAT1910
Objectives On completion of this subject students should know and
understand concepts in the areas of continuity, differential and integral
calculus, and infinite series; have developed and extended their skills in
calculating derivatives, integrals and series, and in applying these concepts
and techniques to various problems; and and be acquainted with computer algebra
and its use in calculus.
Synopsis Limits and continuity. Derivatives and applications.
Integration, applications and techniques. Sequences and series; Taylor series.
An introduction to computer algebra using DERIVE.
Assessment Examination (2 hours): 85% + Assignments (5): 15%
